I bought this on Kindle, but found it too rich to keep only there, so I ordered a "real" copy to have handy, not especially to look things up to deepen my knowledge, as one would use a dictionary, but just to flip open and read a few entries at random. Each entry is written with a wonderful combination of authority and humour (unlike dictionaries). Anyway, I couldn't look up many of the entries in this book as I didn't know about them until I found them here - hence it is a great source of "new knowledge" for this aspiring writer.Product details

This book has been a tremendous help in teaching me to write my memoir. Thank you Mr. Lowenkopf!
You hear this about so many writing instruction guides, but in my case it is the absolute truth. Shelly Lowenkopf covers every possible angle from A-Z (literally). His insights will always lead you and your writing down the right path. It will not necessarily make that path any easier but it will certainly make the destination sweeter when you arrive.
From a Master who has left a reference tomb for all present and future writers to rely upon. Thanks you Mr. Lowenkopf for providing clear concepts for us to reference when needed (which is often).
I have a mountain of books on writing. Loads. Mr. Lowenkopf's treatise has, for me, been the most useful. The reason for this is its direct and very thorough elucidation of principles, elements, and approach of writing in an alphabetically listed illustration. I highly recommend making this purchase. Mr. Lowenkopf is a world renowned editor and craftsman of the writing art and buying this book will serve you well.
I was pleased with the data, and straight answers, however i thought it could have been more to th point about too much filler in a short novel. I doubt if any of us likes to be inundated with facte we are not interested in. Such as the color of the carpet,the lenght of the drapes, and if the were slightly worn. Also who cares if he has shaggy hair, from lack of care. sounds like the beginning of a poem,
in fact i would suggest reading a Stuart Woods novel, and see how a master does it.
"The Fiction Writer's Handbook" is an invaluable resource for each and every writer and belongs in their library right next to "The Elements of Style" and "The Art of Dramatic Writing."
Not only is "The Handbook" indispensable, but intriguing. And while the author, himself, might advise against reading it straight through, I couldn't help myself...I needed to know more about "The Choking Doberman" and "The Drunk in the Parking Lot."
Along the way, Shelly Lowenkopf (author) suggests a great many authors and their works. My Wishlist is officially full.
A very unusual handbook. Author takes words going into great detail showing as well as telling the why and where for writers vocabulary. If you wonder about how to use conflict in your writing there are examples as well as detail explanation of the word "conflict". Glad I got it as book as the ink on printed page just might be worn off (lol). Like being able to have it on my laptop, my kindle and my phone. No matter where I am writing book is with me
